Oman participation in the International Boston Seafood Show at Boston, USA

Following the successful participation at the International Boston Seafood Show during 2007, 2008 & 2009, the Omani Centre for Investment Promotion and Export Development (OCIPED) in coordination with the Directorate General of Fisheries Resources, Ministry of Fisheries is participating in the International Boston Seafood Show from 14th to 16th March 2010 at Boston, USA. 4 Omani fish exporting companies are participating under “OMAN PAVILION”. 600 Sq. ft (fully built up) exhibition space has been booked.

The International Boston Seafood show is one of the largest seafood exhibitions in North America which is attended by a large number of importers from North America as well as Europe. 88% of the visitors to the exhibition have purchasing authority, 76% of visitors plan to make purchases as a result of attending the show.

Mr. Faris Nasser Al Farsi, Acting Director General of Export Development of OCIPED informed that there is a need to take advantage of the Oman – US FTA wherein Omani fish can enter US market without any import duty thereby making Omani fish highly competitive in the US market. Mr. Faris further added that the Products Purchased by Visitors to the Boston Seafood exhibition are 60% Frozen Seafood, 45% Fresh Seafood, 21% Aquaculture/Farm Raised, 14% Canned Seafood. Hence Omani fish exporters will have the opportunity to meet with importers of different product segment in USA.

Mr. Nasr Fayiz Sbeit Al Farsi of Ministry of Fisheries informed that fresh and frozen Seafood, frozen and fresh shrimps, and pre-cooked frozen tuna Loins will be exhibited at the Boston Seafood show.

OCIPED has been organizing fish exporter’s participation to the exporter’s seafood exhibitions for the past 3 years and have been forwarding the addresses of the US importers to fish exporters. As a result of all this, fish valued more than US$ 200,000 has been exported by Al Marsa and Oman fisheries to the USA during 2009.

Mr. Faris hopes that the participation in the Boston Seafood Show during March 2010 will help in increasing fish exports to the USA by taking advantage of the Free Trade Agreement between the Sultanate of Oman and United States of America.
